Mikaela Joyce is a multi-media artist and animator based in New England.
Her practice as an artist is multimedia; she composites 2D/3D found materials on canvas with the hand-painted elements. Inspired by everything from stained-glass windows and pre-med textbooks, her pieces juxtapose subjects thematically. Her artwork explores the surreal, themes of the subconscious, identity, and transmutation.
Mikaela's artistic portfolio includes time-based mediums including animation and video installations. Her stop-motion animation process integrates traditional methodology and modern technological tools (digital composition and SFX). She leverages archival footage in her pieces and builds her video art in layers; paralleling her 2D multimedia practice. Her video art explores themes of surveillance, feminine identities, psychoanalysis, and black comedy.
Mikaela holds a bachelor's degree in Studio Art and Media Studies from Pitzer College, where she minored in Art History. She was an apprentice to Italian artist Fausto Beretti during her semester abroad at Toschi Art Institute in Parma, Italy. Mikaela completed her master's degree in Media Design at Emerson College, where she was awarded the Graduate President's Citation for her technology prototypes and neurodivergency research. She was awarded a Spot Award by the MIT School of Science in 2022 for her contributions to AI educational programming for air force personnel during her time at MIT CSAIL. In addition to her artistic practice, Mikaela is a technology aficionado who shares her thoughts on AI on her blog.
